It is recommended that you abstain from sexual activity (including masturbation) for 2-3 days before having the test done.

The lab will provide a cup into which the man ejaculates. The test can be done at home or at the lab itself. Please note that if you are giving the sample from home, it needs to be handed in to the lab within one hour from ejaculation.

A few tips:

1)    Be sure hands and penis are cleaned prior to collection
2)    Don’t use any lubricant or saliva
3)    Use the sterile cup provided
4)    Don’t touch the inside of the cup
5)    If any semen spills, don’t transfer it to the cup

The results:

A normal semen analysis is indicated as follows.

Volume: >2.0ml
Concentration: >20 million/ml
Total sperm:  >40  million
Motility: 50%
Morphology: >14%

If one or more of the results are not within the normal range, it is recommended that the test be repeated a few weeks later.

Additional factors that will appear on the test include:

White and red blood cell counts. If these are abnormally high, your doctor will prescribe antibiotics.

Semen Viscosity. Coagulated sperm should liquefy within an hour.

Sperm Agglutination. Sperm “clumps together”. This may be a sign of infection.

There are fertility supplements such as FertilAid for men and Fertipil-Plus that can improve sperm health.
