What exactly is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a medical condition where the uterus lining - normally inside the uterus - develops on the outside of the uterus, but can also be located in the bladder, fallopian tubes, intestines and ovaries.

Endometriosis can spread to the vagina or cervix and has even been known to develop in other areas of the body, including the lungs.

Although women of any reproductive age (from the first menstruation to menopause) can develop endometriosis, it typically affects women between the ages 20 to 30 and of those affected, 1 in 3, struggle with infertility. After menopause, endometriosis diminishes or disappears. Women who suffer from endometriosis often experience severe pain during menstruation. This is because the endometrial tissue that has built up on the outside of the uterus (or other organs) reacts to the hormone changes associated with menstruation. The reaction of the tissue outside the uterus is the same as the natural and proper reaction of the endometrial tissue on the inside, it bleeds off during menstruation.

However, since it is outside the uterus, it bleeds off into the body, causing inflammation, swelling and discomfort, resulting in pain.
